Artists Rally to Help Pepper Lane Seniors Affordable Housing Project

May 03, 2021

You’ve heard of a car rally – how about an artists’ rally that involves cars? That’s what’s happening on Denman Island where “Several” artists are supporting a drive that’s asking car owners to donate their ICBC rebate to the Pepper Land seniors affordable housing project.

ICBC is giving car owners in the province rebates that average about $190. Denman resident Jane Lighthall is inviting others to join her household in donating those rebates to the Denman Community Land Trust Association (DCLTA) for the Pepper Lane project. Those who donate $190 – or more – will be entered into a draw  to be held May 8 to win an original work of art from members of The Group of Several.

“The odds to win are enticingly high as there will be six winners chosen,” says Jane.

Artists Jean Cockburn, Paule Deschenes, Marilyn Jensen, Annie Kimmins, Linda Mather, Brenda Green, and Virginia Spinney are each generously contributing a piece to the campaign.

Funds raised will go toward fencing and hedging for the site – most of which is a requirement of the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) in order to approve removing the property from ALR designation. Time is of the essence now because the Islands Trust recently gave second and third readings of the bylaws that will allow the property to be subdivided. Final approval of these bylaws – expected to come in a few months – will allow the DCLTA to purchase the property – as long as all conditions such as fencing have been met.

The property is owned by Bev Severn and is located on Denman Road behind the Denman Guest House. Pledges and donations from generous Denman residents have helped the DCLTA raise the $100,000 purchase price, however many other costs remain.

“Simply put, this fencing has to be done before the final property transfer can be made,” says Jane. “Costs of building materials are as high as they have ever been, so please consider helping to buy some part of this, whether a post, a panel, or a plant.”
